BBC and Pirates Premiere!
Class was at the BBC TV Centre today. Carrie and I went to the wrong building and almost didn’t make the tour. It was really interesting. It’s not really that much different than in the States other than it’s much bigger. But, if you were to combine all of our local stations, it’d be comparable because the BBC is the only news in the UK. BBC TV Centre Today was also the European Premiere of the new Pirates of the Caribbean movie. Odeon Theatre Pirates of the Caribbean Premiere I was supposed to meet Adi and everyone there, but couldn’t find her or get past security to where she was. Carrie and I ended up going together and met up with some other people. We were getting smashed by all the people, which was to be expected. It was totally worth it though. We got to see Keira, Orlando, and Johnny. I also got some really good pictures. Some I stole from Adi when she got back because she was actually in a better place than me. I was excited because we don’t ever have that sort of thing in Missouri. | | Saturday, July 1st, 2006 | | 11:07 pm |
Brighton
We met Tim at the Victoria Station this morning to go to Brighton for the day. The train took about an hour. When we got there, Tim gave us this little walking tour of the shopping area. Then, we went on a tour of the Royal Palace. This was the palace of King George IV when he was still Prince of Wales. It’s owned by the city of Brighton now. Royal Pavilion We found this great pizzeria to eat at for lunch. It had a 3-course meal for only 6 pounds! It was amazing. I was so excited because I had something similar to shrimp cocktail. I love fresh seafood. And, I haven’t had shrimp cocktail since the cruise I took with Mom 2 years ago. Wait…I had some in Boston in February with Natalie. But, I had it like every night on the cruise. Julie, Meredith, Leanna, and I did some shopping and walked around on Brighton Pier. Leanna, Meredith, and me on the Pier with the English Channel behind us Brighton Pier Then, we went to sit on the pebble…rock…beach and put our feet in the English Channel. We took one of the last trains back to London…but we wanted to get our money’s worth while we were there. | | Friday, June 30th, 2006 | | 10:51 pm |
Wimbledon
My day started at 5:30 this morning. Entirely too early. We had to meet Tim at the South Ken station at 7:00 to go to Wimbledon. Once we got there, we had to queue for like 3 hours. The time actually went by fairly quickly. I heard we weren’t going to get in until about 12:00 or 1:00 and we got in at 11:00. We first went to Court 3 and watched a women’s doubles match. Women's Doubles Match Our tickets were only good for Courts 3-19 and standing only on court 2. Of course, most of the starts play on Court 1 or Centre Court, but those tickets are also way more expensive. Then, we wandered around awhile and did some shopping. Dad wanted me to get him something, so I thought a polo shirt would be good because he could wear it to work…but it was 40 pounds…translation about $80. He may just have killed me if I spent that much. I got him $40 t-shirt instead. Then, we decided to watch a men’s doubles match. Men's Doubles Match When that was over, we went to Court 2 to stand and watch a men’s singles match, but we couldn’t see much. Elizabeth and I went to buy a used championship ball and then came back to the res hall. | | Saturday, June 24th, 2006 | | 11:18 pm |
A Day in Wales
We met again at 8:15 because we were getting picked up at the same spot today for our tour. The drive to Wales took about 3 ½ hours, but we had to stop along the way because British law dictates that the bus driver can only drive for so many hours straight. We bought lunch during our stop so we could eat on the bus later. When we got to Cardiff (the capital of Wales), we had a bus tour of the city. We had the most adorable, little Welsh man as our guide, too. He was talking about the Welsh rail system and he couldn’t think of the English phrase and was like, “they’re building those people movers…trams.” After the bus tour, we had about an hour to explore Cardiff. Natasha, Dara, Me, and Julie at Cardiff Castle Welsh and English We wanted to see Cardiff Castle, but didn't want to spend the money and didn't have the time. Julie and I walked around looking for the Hard Rock Café. We ended up walking all the way around this Millennium Stadium just to find out it was down the street from where we originally were. At least we got our exercise! Adi, Dara, and Natasha went looking in the arcades (markets) to shop and look for Welsh cakes. Those are amazing! They’re hard to describe. It’s like a sweet muffin…almost. They’re flat and coated in sugar. They also usually come with raisins. It’s not quite a pastry, but also not quite as sweet. Adi described is the offspring of a muffin and a pastry. She bought me some since I couldn’t get there and to Hard Rock. (I picked my raisins out.) My shirt I got at Hard Rock is really cool…it has Cardiff written in Welsh on the back. I know…it’s the small things that amuse me. After Cardiff, we drove about a ½ hour and went to Caerphilly Castle. This is the second largest castle in the UK, only to Windsor Castle. Stonehenge & Bath
Today we met each other downstairs at 8:15 (entirely too early for me) because we had to meet our tour bus at 9:00 at the Earl’s Court tube station to go to Stonehenge and Bath for the day. It took about 2 hours to get to Bath. Once we got there we went into the Roman Baths and spent about an hour there. The Roman Baths Then, we wanted to go see the Jane Austen Centre, but it cost about 6 pounds and we only had about 45 minutes, so we decided not to go. Instead we went to look for this famous restaurant and Bath Buns. A Bath Bun is a plain roll and they cut into it and put different kinds of fruit in it. They’re supposed to be famous in Bath. We could only get plain ones for take away, so we skipped that as well and went looking for a place we could get sandwiches for take away to eat on the bus. We all really enjoyed Bath, but wished we had more time there to explore the city. After Bath, the tour went to Stonehenge. We just walked around there and took pictures. It’s really cool to say I’ve been to Stonehenge, but really it is just some rocks and once you see it, that’s really all there is to it. Stonehenge Leanna, Dara, Natasha, Me, Elizabeth, Julie, and Adi at Stonehenge Even though there’s some stuff I’d change about the tour, I think it was worth it because I got to see a lot in one day for a relatively good price…and by that I mean good for the UK, not once converted to US dollars…then it gets expensive with the exchange rate and all. | | Thursday, June 22nd, 2006 | | 9:47 pm |
19 Princelet St.
Happy Birthday Maria! I finally got to meet my other professor for my London and WWI class, Dr. Atkinson this morning. She’s basically teaching the female side of the war and Julian (my professor from my other class, actually) is teaching the male side of the war. After class, Meredith, Leanna, and I went to this immigration museum that Miia had emailed us about. It’s free until Sunday in honor of Refugee Week. It’s this house from the 1700s that has been turned into a museum honoring and remembering immigrants to Britain. It was really interesting learning about that, especially considering that in the States all you learn about is immigration to the U.S. and don’t even really think about how other countries also have immigration. Leanna and me outside the immigration museum. | | Wednesday, June 21st, 2006 | | 9:47 pm |
Jack the Ripper
This afternoon I had my Media and Politics class. I have to come up with a paper topic by next week and I have no idea what I want to write about. Tonight we went on a Jack the Ripper tour as the final part of orientation. It was free…which means we already essentially paid for with fees and such. The tour wasn’t all that bad. The guide told the story of Jack the Ripper and took us to the sites of the murders. Site of one of the murders It also us The Ten Bells pub, which Jack the Ripper supposedly liked to frequent. Johnny Depp apparently had a few pints there when he was filming the movie, From Hell. The Ten Bells Pub The best part of the tour was seeing the prostitutes. Haha. Then, Tim told us that when they did this tour in January, this lady came up to them and was coughing. He said that he asked her if she was ok, to which she responded, “Oh, yeah, I’m a crack-whore.” It’s definitely going to be a good summer…. | | Tuesday, June 20th, 2006 | | 9:15 pm |
Go England!
Class today was at the Imperial War Museum. It was a lot of fun. We went to this exhibit on war in the trenches. They actually reconstructed a model trench that you can walk through to get the feel of what it was like. Then, we saw the displays on war on homefront and the artwork depicting the war. We met outside to talk about what we saw, etc. Before we had our meeting though, our professor, Julian bought us all ice cream. When we thanked him, he was like, “What else are you supposed to do an a sunny day?” So, for the last half hour of class we ate ice cream and talked about what the museum. Imperial War Musuem After dinner, Elizabeth and I met up with some other people at Zetland Arms, a pub by the South Kensington tube station to watch the World Cup match between England and Sweden. This one guy, Jordan (I met him in class earlier) introduced me to his cousin, Tim because Tim goes to Mizzou. It turns out, he’s my friend Sarah’s ex-boyfriend. Small world. The match was frustrating because England went up 1-0, but then Sweden tied it up. Finally, towards the end of the match England went ahead again 2-1, but with like a minute left Sweden tied it up again. This guy Greg said that England has never beaten Sweden, so the win would have been huge. Both teams still advanced to the next round, so it’s not as bad as it could’ve been. | | Sunday, June 18th, 2006 | | 9:14 pm |
Markets
We met at 8:00 this morning downstairs for a market crawl. First, we went to the Road Flower Market. If I could take stuff home I would have gotten some flowers. Flowers at the Flower Market Stoned and Plastered sign at the Market Then, we went to the Spitalfields Market. I found some earrings I liked, but they were too expensive. Elizabeth, Adi, and I had lunch and then came back to the res hall because we were exhausted. Tonight, we planned some of our weekend trips and booked our trip to Stonehenge and Bath for Friday. | | Saturday, June 17th, 2006 | | 12:02 am |
Greenwich!
We met at 9:00 this morning for our orientation trip to Greenwich. We left from the pier near the Tower of London. Tower of London Tower Bridge We took a boat down the Thames River to get there. Greenwich is actually now part of the greater London area, but it’s still it’s own town. We went to the Royal Observatory first to this museum about time and space. We also saw the Prime Meridian. I have a picture of me with one foot in the Western Hemisphere and one foot in the Eastern Hemisphere, so that was really cool. Me on the Prime Meridian Julie and I wandered around Greenwich after that and found a place for lunch. Then, we went to the National Maritime Museum. Anchor from 1790 at the National Maritime Museum To get home, we walked through this tunnel going under the Thames River and then took the tube back to the res hall. Julie and I just booked flights and our hostel for our trip to Barcelona in the middle of July! We were wanting to go to Pamplona and see the running of the bulls, but timing wise, it’s not going to work out, so we’re just going to Barcelona, which I know, isn’t too terrible. I’m really excited because I’ve always wanted to go to Spain. I was able to book the first flight there, but then it wouldn’t accept by Visa for the second flight. (We realized that it would be cheaper to book two flights instead of round-trip.) I ended up just using my Mastercard instead for the second flight, so now I’m glad I have two credit cards. I have to email Mom and ask her to call and see if she can figure out what’s going on. | | Friday, June 16th, 2006 | | 11:54 pm |
Temple Church
Elizabeth, Adi, and I met around 10:30 this morning to go sightseeing in London. The city of London versus the metro area. There are dragons that mark the entrance to the actual city. Dragon at entrance to the City of London We first went to Temple Church and met Dara there. The DaVinci Code was actually filmed there. I was surprised because I thought they would have constructed a set in LA or something. It was really cool to see that. I want to see the movie again to pick out the stuff I saw today. Effigys at Temple Church After that, we walked down to the Royal Courts of Justice. Elizabeth and I were hoping to get to sit in on a trial or something, but no such luck. Adi and Dara weren’t really interested in that so we split up. Elizabeth and I walked around…we couldn’t take pictures, but we looked at some of the stuff they had on display. Then, we went upstairs and looked at the displays of robes and clothing worn by the different judges. Royal Courts of Justice We then went to St. Clements Church, or RAF Church. This was interesting because a bomb directly hit it during WWII, but it has since been reconstructed. Now, some of the outside walls still show places where pieces of shrapnel took out chunks of the concrete. Side of the RAF Church with concrete missing We went to get lunch at this “Award-Winning” Cornish Pasty place. It was really good. I was a little nervous because I didn’t know what it really was. It’s almost like a hot pocket in the States. Mine had chicken and potatoes in it. Then, we took the tube to see St. Johns Gate. We thought it was going to be really cool like Temple Church was, but it was just a bunch of display cases. After St. Johns Gate, we came back to the res hall to get stuff done and have dinner. After dinner, Elizabeth and I wanted to go to a pub to see one of the World Cup matches. We ended up with Julie, James (a friend of my kitchenmates) and Hilary (one of my kitchenmates) at the White Horse. I had about 2 pints of cider. It was actually really good. Now, don’t get me wrong…I’m not abandoning my AB roots. I will forever be an AB girl, but when AB products aren’t on tap here and if they even have them at all, it’s going to be insanely expensive. So, I have to make do with something else. Elizabeth said it tasted more like beer than the cider she had when she was in Spain. Hilary said Irish cider is better. | | Thursday, June 15th, 2006 | | 1:23 am |
Another day of class...
Today came way to early. I ended up running into Meredith and going to class with her this morning. We then ran into Dara on the way. The three of us have London and WWI together at 10:00 on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All the classes run for 2 ½ hours. This class doesn’t seem to be all that bad. It seems really interesting because we don’t learn a lot about WWI in the US. We also have a lot of field study trips to get the “experience” of the war, so that should make it more fun, too. And, there’s not really a lot of reading. After class, Dara and I went to Waterstone’s to get the only book for class. Everything else is either recommended reading or will be in the form of class handouts. I just came back to the res hall after that and she was going home. She’s doing a homestay instead of staying at the res hall. I haven’t done much since then…I made lunch and took a nap because I could barely keep my eyes open. I’ve just gotten caught up on stuff and cleaned in my room a little since then. I watched the Cardinals game on gameday and made dinner and then tried to get a little reading done for class so I’m not behind. We decided to go to Greenwich on Saturday with the group, especially since we already paid for it. Adi also talked to Tim and he said that he’s tried to go to the Queen’s parade twice before and gotten there at like 6:00 in the morning and still didn’t see anything. Elizabeth and I made plans to go see Temple Church and the Royal Courts of Justice tomorrow. I think Adi and Dara are going to at least come with us to Temple Church. That’s the famous church in the DaVinci Code, so I’m excited. Anyway, time for bed…the nap woke me up a little too much and now I’m up late…again. | | Wednesday, June 14th, 2006 | | 12:50 am |
Les Miserables
Elizabeth, Brad, and I met this morning to go get library cards for the Senate House library so we can use that while we’re here. I found most of my required books at the library, which I’m glad because otherwise I’d have to buy them. Then, we went to Waterstone’s Bookstore and Elizabeth and Brad got most of their books. I have to go back tomorrow for one of mine. They said they didn’t have it, but then I talked to my professor and he said that they should, so we shall see. We stopped for lunch at this sandwich place and then went to Bloomsbury Square to eat. After that, I had my first class – Media and UK Politics. I really like my professor and even though there is going to be a lot of reading involved, I think I’m going to really enjoy the class. We get to take a field trip to the BBC Centre in a few weeks, so I’m excited about that. I talked to him after class for awhile too, mostly to ask about the book I couldn’t find earlier, because he’s one of my professors for my class tomorrow. I was supposed to meet Elizabeth after class, but we must have missed each other. I was really proud of myself though because I made it back to the res hall from the centre all by myself, so now I have a little more confidence in getting around London…at least to the places I need to go. This evening, Elizabeth, Adi, Dara, Meredith, and I went to see Les Miserables. We bought standby tickets (which were much cheaper) and then because we were students we also got a discount. We had seats that normally cost 50 pounds (roughly $100) for only 20 pounds (roughly $20). The show was amazing! It makes me want to see so many more. We’re planning on at least seeing The Phantom of the Opera and some others. Mom and Dad are going to kill me for all the money I’m spending. Oh well…I’ll deal with that later. Dara, Meredith, Elizabeth, and me before Les Miserables IES is sponsoring an orientation day trip to Greenwich on Saturday, but there’s also this big parade honoring the Queen’s birthday. Her birthday is actually in April, but they hold the parade in June in hopes of having better weather. At least Elizabeth, Adi, and I are considering going to the parade on Saturday instead and then planning our own trip to Greenwich on Friday since we don’t have classes on Fridays. We shall see tomorrow when we can all talk and make plans | | Tuesday, June 13th, 2006 | | 12:38 am |
Final Orientation
Today was all of the final orientation stuff. IES provided a travel fair this morning with information on travel companies if we want to do weekend trips. Elizabeth and I went to that together. Then, we met up with this other guy, Brad and the three of us went to Tesco and got lunch. Tesco is a grocery store, but they sell those pre-packaged sandwiches. We went to Russell Square to eat and then lay under the tress and talked for awhile. In the afternoon, we had a bus tour of London. Elizabeth and I made lists of everything we want to see. The only time we got off the bus was at Buckingham Palace. Buckingham Palace After that tour, we had a tour of the British Museum. This is a museum all on ancient history. Rosetta Stone I could spend days there. Our guide said that even if you spent 30 seconds looking at each item, it would still take 2 years to get through the entire museum. We just came back to the res hall after that and I made dinner. I was supposed to go on this pub crawl with Cate and her friends, but I backed out because it was too expensive. | | Monday, June 12th, 2006 | | 8:20 pm |
Orientation
Orientation started today. We met at 9:00 and walked to the tube station together. In the morning it was basic orientation stuff. Then, we had a break for lunch. We went to this food court. The afternoon was academic orientation. Then, we had a faculty reception and got our syllabi and met our professors. Adi, Elizabeth, Julie, and I went grocery shopping (again) because Adi and I didn’t get much the last time we went. When we got back, Adi introduced me to one of our kitchenmates, Cate. Then, we met Cate’s roommate Hilary. Both are from the Boston area and go to school there. We talked to them for awhile while we were making dinner. Cate invited me to this pub crawl they’re going on tomorrow, but it’s kind of expensive and I don’t know that I want to be out drinking the night before our first day of classes. | | Sunday, June 11th, 2006 | | 8:16 pm |
First real day
First, I slept till noon today. Our museum craw started at 1:00. It was supposed to be until 5:00, but because it was so nice today, it only went until about 3:15. Then, we had gelato, real Italian ice cream. We could have up to 3 scoops, so I had coffee, cookies ‘n’ cream and strawberry. After that Adi, Elizabeth, & Dara went on this Harry Potter walking tour. It was just points that inspired the books and the history behind it. Even though I haven’t read the books, it was interesting. After the tour, we went to My Old Dutch, a pancake house for dinner. We have to be ready to leave for orientation tomorrow at 9:00, so it’s time for bed! Double decker bus | | Saturday, June 10th, 2006 | | 8:04 pm |
Finally Here...
We landed about 6:30 this morning. My plan was to take the airbus and then a cab to my residence hall. However, I found out the airbus is no longer operating, so I was directed to take the regular charter bus and then a cab. So I did that instead. I finally got to where I'm staying around 9:00-9:30 this morning. We couldn't get into our rooms yet because not everyone had checked out yet. So, we took our stuff to one of the common rooms (lounges on the individual floors, like in Cramer) and hung out there. Then, we went to get our subway pass for the time we're here. P.S. I can't afford that with my monthly money....it was $256.81, but that was the cheapest way to do it rather than buying a new pass every day. Here's the website for the underground passes if you want to look at what would be practical for you two. tfl.gov.uk/oyster I think I twisted my knee or something because it kinda hurts to walk on, but one of the director people gave me directions to the drugstore nearby and I bought an elastic brace for it. If it doesn't feel better in a couple of days, Miia (the director person) said I could go to the doctor. She said the whole thing would be covered by the insurance, but I have to pay it upfront and bring the reciepts back and be reimbursed. So, we'll see in a few days. After that whole ordeal, we could finally get in our rooms. My roommate's name is Adi. She's from Chicago and goes to USC majoring in film studies/production. We had dinner at Pizza Express tonight and have been getting to know each other better. The rest of the afternoon was some orientation stuff and introductions of people we should know, etc. etc. The rooms are no fun...no AC and it's hot here. Tomorrow the only thing we have is a Museum Crawl from 1-5. Academic Orientation stuff starts on Monday and goes till Tuesday. Classes start on Wednesayday. Next Saturday, the 17th, we have an orientation day trip to Greenwich. Next, Tuesday, the 20th, we are going on the "Jack the Ripper" Tour. That's all that's planned so far. | | Friday, June 9th, 2006 | | 11:19 pm |
Sad day
We had to leave today. Meg and I didn’t get to bed until about 3:00 last night. We stopped at the BU bookstore and I got a jacket first. Then, we met Collin for lunch at the original Cheers bar for a farewell lunch. Me and Meg outside the Cheers bar Meg and I spent the rest of the afternoon wandering around. We left to go back to the hostel to get stuff around 3:00 and then went to the airport. We had to say goodbye before getting on the shuttles because we were at two different terminals. I checked in and got to my gate. I just called Mom and talked to her for a little while. I want to go to London, but I had such a great time this week with Collin and Meg…I don’t want to leave Boston! I miss them already. I wish we all lived closer together… | | Thursday, June 8th, 2006 | | 11:14 pm |
Sleep! Meg and I slept in today until about 12:15! We didn’t get out of the hostel until about 2:00. Collin wanted to meet for lunch at 12:00, but we changed it to dinner at 5:00. When I got the text message, Meg and I just laughed because there was no way we were getting out of bed in time to meet him for lunch. Once we finally got up, we went looking for the Hard Rock Café so Meg could get her bear. Then, we walked around and took a tour of Trinity Church. As we were trying to decide what to de next, we saw signs advertising a Joan of Arc exhibit in the public library, so we went to see that. By this time, we had to meet Collin for dinner. He didn’t have much time because he had class at 7:00 so we ate at the Corner Food Court. Meg and I both just had crab rangoon because we were going to have chocolate and pastries later. Trinity Church After dinner, Meg and I went to Faneuil Hall and Quincy Market. We did some shopping and had dessert. I had a strawberry crème puff and she had a cannoli and we split a Boston Crème Pie. We decided to get something for all three of us that was the same. We talked about Christmas ornaments, but they were too expensive. We settled on a picture of three ducks in the Public Garden. We had all the pictures personalized with all of our names and Boston 2006 on it. We want to make it a tradition each year we get together. We’re talking about meeting in Toledo, Ohio next year because Meg will still be in grad school at Bowling Green. Collin graduates in December and I graduate in May, so who knows where we’ll be then, though. Boston Creme Pie! After shopping we went to Collin’s because he was out of class. We ordered pizza from My Brother’s Place and spent the rest of the night hanging out. It’s going to be another late night…these things happen while on vacation. | | Wednesday, June 7th, 2006 | | 9:41 pm |
Beer and Providence Meg and I slept in a little more today. We then took the T to Harvard to meet Ian for lunch. Oh yeah…and it poured all freaking day. My jeans are soaked practically to my knees. My shoes are soaked, too. I hope it all dries out by tomorrow because it’s supposed to rain again and I don’t want another pair of jeans all gross. Anyway, we met Ian for lunch and went to this little diner-like place…I don’t remember the name… Meg, do you? Ian is so great…he paid for lunch for us. Then, Meg and I were going to go on the Sam Adams Brewery Tour and we talked Ian into going with us. The tour was interesting and then we got to taste three kinds of beer – Boston lager, Summer Ale, and something else that was dark. We also got to keep the little glass. The walk back to the T was in the rain of course, which led to me being more soaked. Funny story…Ian gave us his business card. He’s a member of The Good Guys, Inc. Funny story behind this is that him and a friend saw these guys pick up some girls by giving them business cards. Therefore Ian and his friend thought this was the way to go. He gave one to the girl that became his girlfriend and when she found out what it was really for, she was like, “That’s what that was for?!” We said goodbye to Ian and headed for the Harvard bookstore. That was a chore to find. Once we did, we were thoroughly soaked…I didn’t know I could be that soaked. I found a girls tee I wanted. This was also after we discovered the bookstore is actually 2 buildings – one for books and one for merchandise. Oh, to have that kind of money! After that, we headed back to our hostel because had to meet Collin. He was taking us to Providence for the evening. Krys was picking us up around 7:00. I had to change my clothes since they were so soaked. Once we got to Providence, we stopped at Collin’s house so he could see his mom and dog and then went to his friend Al’s house to change cars. They took us to Spike’s, this amazing hot dog place. I had a Texas Ranger Dog – a hot dog with BBQ sauce, bacon, and cheese. It was actually really good. I was surprised because I was afraid I wouldn’t like it, but it was great! Spike’s had other kinds of hot dogs, too. The funniest part had to be when the guy behind the counter (who was being incredibly annoying the entire time) asked if Meg was going to kick his ass, and she answered so quickly and matter-of-factly, yes. Good, times. Then, we went over to the Providence Mall and down to this walkway along the water. Collin showed us this memorial created to honor the victims of 9/11. Krys showed us her square on the wall. Collin’s is in by the Convention Center (I think…correct me if I’m wrong), so he just showed us where his name was written. We walked around a little more and then made the hour drive back up to Boston. Before we left, Collin said he wanted to get coffee syrup…apparently if you put this stuff you get coffee milk, which is like the state drink of Rhode Island. He forgot to get some though…so that means he needs to bring some out to Nebraska with him and when I come to visit sometime I can try this infamous coffee milk. Anyway, time for bed now! |
